What for?
The organisation of a regional conference of ILGA provides an opportunity for Asian activists to reflect on ways to consolidate their movement and further progress in self organising on a regional level. ILGA is currently seeking funds to implement the workplan that will be decided at the conference.
Regional self organising can include:
- electing representatives from the region to ILGA’s world board which is an elected body of 16 activists:
- two for each of its six regions
- two for the Women's and Trans Secretariats (one each) and
- two Secretaries Generals
- electing a specific board for the region,
- organising regular meetings for activits and/or
- setting up a permanent office which can campaign according to a workplan decided by member groups.
Asia is currently represented on ILGA’s world board by:
- Mira Alexis P. Ofreneo, The Philippines
- Aung Myo Min - Committee for Lesbigay Rights in Burma - Chiang Mai, Thailand
- Sulastri Arrifin (as reserve member)
They have been elected by Asian activists at ILGA’s last regional conference in Cebu, the Philippines.
As a world federation, ILGA strives to see self run regional federations come to life
Pan Africa ILGA and
ILGA LAC are the two regional other regional federations of ILGA along with ILGA-Asia and ILGA-Europe.
ILGA currently works together with activists elected at the recent regional conferences in Lima and Johannesburg to build stronger regional federations in Africa and Latin America and The Caribbean.
In addition to its central office, ILGA only has one regional office.
ILGA-Europe is an independant structure which was founded in 1996. It is headed by a regional board of activists elected by their peers at annual regional conferences. Because of its representative and democratic structure, ILGA-Europe is recognised as an interlocutor by major European institutions whenever policies affecting the rights of the LGBT community need to be defined.
